As we talk with clients, we've learned a great deal about when people like to send gifts. The holidays are a given for gift-giving; however, not everyone likes to wait until the holidays to send business gifts.
Below are five additional situations in which our clients send gifts.
1. Welcoming a new employee to the team.
On-boarding a new partner or employee can be a process fraught with piles of paperwork, mnemonic devices to remember everyone's name and adventures in expectation-setting.
Showing someone that you appreciate them from the beginning can set a positive tone and remind them that they chose the right place to work. A gift can be the perfect way to say "Welcome to the team! We look forward to working with you."
2. After someone sends a business referral.
Referrals are a critical part of finding new clients. It's hard to drum up new business from cold calls, so when someone goes out of their way to tell a friend or colleague that they should work with you, it's important that you reach out and thank them. You would be surprised by how much people appreciate a handwritten message and gifts from you (even if they're small!).
When we receive referrals, we take the time to handwrite thank you cards.
3. When you've been hired by a new client.
With hours of cold calling and research for each new business opportunity, it takes a great deal of work to find the perfect client for whom you can deliver the right service or product. Additionally, you can assume that competitors are always courting your clients.
Go the extra mile to show them how much you value their business by sending them a "Welcome" gift with some items that they will love.
4. When you finish a big project.
Don't you love it when you nail a big project? Once you've tied up all the loose ends and delivered a wonderful project or service, wow your clients and partners even more with a gift that shows you appreciate the opportunity to work with and collaborate with them.
5. When you haven't been in touch with a client for some time.
Most of us don't have the time to talk to our clients on a regular basis. To keep your brand top-of-mind, send them a brief note and something small to remind them that you appreciate their business. Maybe it's just a bag of popcorn or candy, but they will love that you made time to send them something.
